Brian May wildlife centre: recycled 'cannabis' lamps donated

Heat lamps and power units confiscated in raids on cannabis farms in Surrey have been recycled to warm wildlife at a rescue centre owned by Brian May.

The Queen guitarist supports the Harper Asprey Wildlife Rescue Centre, a charity which operates on land he owns near Camberley.

The equipment was donated by Surrey Police neighbourhood officers.

"We confiscate so many items and thought they should go to a good cause," said Sgt Christopher Mallet.

"The Harper Asprey Wildlife Rescue Trust does great work in helping wildlife in the area we police."

Animal welfare champion May, who has homes in London and Surrey, is a long-term supporter of the rescue centre, which cares for more than 1,600 animals a year.

The rock legend's work was recognised by the International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW) in a ceremony at the House of Lords in 2012.

May presented the Surrey Heath safer neighbourhood team with an award in recognition of their contribution at a Wildlife Rocks charity event at Guildford Cathedral on Saturday.
